Umbra Nihil roughly translated from Latin means “'No Shadow”, a phrase which misguided my initial thought’s of what the band would sound like. I was thinking some sort of folk metal from the cd’s artwork, which is adorned with a blue maze and nothing else. But it was fortunately not like what I had assumed. The vocals on this album are deep and hoarse; VV doesn’t over do it with trying to sound too demonic. There are not a lot of vocals on this album; it’s geared more towards the music. The music is very dark, almost excessively gloomy at times, slow yet interesting. Songs wander through a lot of different parts that seem to evolve into more intense ethereal passages. A few riffs here and there bring to mind Disembowelment's "Transcendence Into The Peripheral" album. A lot of odd changes in the structure of the music gives this cd a good amount of distinctiveness for “slow obscure metal”, meaning it isn’t getting boring anytime soon.
