This jewel of thrash appeared out of the blue in 1988 and ever since, my standards for Metal were so elevevated because of it, that many releases of the time just were like the buzzing of flies on my ear. No turning back.
The band come together in 1983 and released a demo which ended up in Capitol Records in 1987. This came at a time when Thrash was finally popular by public standards and Megadeth was on the same label as well.
The LP didn't fare well in the American market yet it influenced a lot of European bands and many such as Mayhem, site them as influences. Why? First off the LP was fast, the riffing was insane, all the topics of the songs were about macabre shit which had come from horror movies (too bad we can't ask Quorthon the same as he had done just that in Bathory).
Ok so we got kick ass music and what better to compliment this set up than the aggressive vocals of Bruce Corbitt. He, for the period being, didn't use high pitch screams, didnt growl, didn't do soft spoken passages... Instead he spewed forth a militant vocal attack the likes of which no one I know of has matched. Not even his replacement, Doyle Bright, who took over the vocal slot in the next 2 RM releases , could quite get it even though he was close. OF course, they were too heavy to be in a major label so, they were let go and a few changes ensued. All in all, forget about 1988 as the year Slayer released the disappointing "South of Heaven". As far as I am concerned Rigor Mortis desecrated all in it's path, and there wasn't shit that could measure up to it then or now for the matter.
