Interview With Shaun Lacanne Of Putrid Pile
First off Shaun, I would like to thank you for taking time out of you filled schedule to do this interview with me. I really apperciate it alot my friend.. 1) So what is your most favorite Putrid Pile, song that you have written? Shaun) Well i'd have to say i love all of the songs i write. They're all my babies and i have that bond with all of them. but if i had to pick 1 song in particular i would have to say "FOOD FOR THE MAGGOTS." I really enjoy playing this song and it always goes over really well live! 2) How did Putrid Pile, get it's start? Have you ever wanted to be a full band? Shaun) yes as a matter of fact i did want Putrid Pile to be a full band. I've had members here and there, but nothing really ever worked out. People had conflicting schedules and such, so they never really worked out. So im still just plugging along solo. I started the band after my old band Numskull (80's thrash masters) broke up. I loved the underground and loved how it was about the music and not the cash. I still wanted to be a part of that so i picked up a drum machine and started writing the sickness that is Putrid Pile! 3) What equipment do you use live and record with? Do you have your own home studio to record with? Shaun) I just demo tracks at home with my Halo guitar, a Johnson J Station, my DR5 DR. Rhythum Section drum machine, and a digital 8-track. For live i use my Jackson guitar with EMG pickups, a Marshall Valvestate amp and my Tascam Minidisc Recorder. This way i can have my 1st two cd's all on one disc and pick and choose what song i want to play at what gig very easily. 4) What influences your lyrics? And some of your insane sounding vocals? Shaun) Well what influences my sick guttural vocal style is a lot of the vocalists in the underground today. I love the vocalists that try to get as low as they can go. Trying to push the limits of the human vocal chords. I think it adds that special something to the heaviness of the extreme music. As far as my lyrics go.... what inspires me to write the lyrics i do is the craziness that happens around the world. True crime, fetishes, sick people. Shit like that always gets people to choke back vomiting. Its kinda funny to get that reaction out of people. There's two kinds of people when if comes to the disgusting lyrics. THose who choke back the urge to vomit, and those who laugh out loud. I dont take my lyrics very seriously at all, so id have to say i would the the second kind! 5) What can we expect from Putrid Pile in the future? Shaun) I would have to say my sickest material to date! I know, I know everybody says that about their new material, but i've added some solos in the new material and also have gotten a little bit more technical in my song writing. i wil still always have the slam aspect in my writing because i love slam and breakdowns, but i love speed and technicality as well. I'm Very proud of the new stuff and cant wait to release it! 6) Was Putrid Pile, your first band or is there others that you have been involved in? Shaun) I was involved in a local band in high school that never did anything or went anywhere. We were just happy playing if the basement for our friends and partying. Then i joined Numskull and was with them for about 3 years. They broke up in '99 and i started writing Putrid Pile songs right away. 7) Do you have any other projects that you are apart of right now? Shaun) im starting a new grind band called Mince Meat with K.P. Ripper from Screaming Afterbirth and Jon Engman from Foetopsy. Its going to be very sick shit! I just plan on having it be a studio project though. I dont plan to ever take it on the road. 8) What are some of your favorite brutal death metal bands now? Shaun) Spawn Of Possession, Amputated, Foetopsy, Cliteater, man the list goes on and on. I could sit here forever! LOL! 9) What do you think of this whole new version of death metal that seems to be taking over? Shaun) I really dont care as long as its metal! LOL! All i know is i have to stay true to my guitar and keep writing what i feel. If that's what those people are feeling then they should have at it. As long as its brutal i like it. I'm really not too picky when it comes to brutal bands. I like them all pretty much. 10) If you where stranded on a island, What are 6 items you would just have to take with you? Shaun) LOL!! Well i would need my guitar, a solar powered radio, a blowup doll, a hunting knife, a boyscouts manual, and a vast quantity of courage! 11) So what is in your cd player at home or in your car right now? Shaun) The new Embalmer cd "13 Faces Of Death" 12) Your song Food For The Maggots is the most played on myspace and the most grooveable death metal song that i think that i have ever heard. What spawned this song? The guitar riffs are fucking beautiful! Shaun) Thank you very much for your kind words!! Sometime when i write songs i'll imagine myself standing in a crowd looking at a stage and imagine what i would like to hear coming out of the PA system when i'm there. That's kinda what happened there. I just heard that groove and everything fell into place after that opening riff. 13) What is the most craziest thing you have seen on the road? Shaun) People passed out in their own vomit. I can never get used to that! LOL! 14) Have you though about coming to Huntington Wv, to play cause i know alot of people here that would kill to see you live? Shaun) I'll play pretty much where ever they'll have me! I'd love to come out there and crush sometime. 15) What is your recording process like? Do you find it hard sometimes being a one member band? Or is it eaiser for you? Shaun) Yes it's hard and strenuous. I first lay down all of the drum machine tracks. Then the scratch guitars. Then i overdub live cymabl tracks and then toms and finally the snare drum. Then the drums are done. After that i move to the bass guitar and then 6 string guitars. Finally i do my low vocals and then the highs. It takes a min. to do all of that by yourself, but it's worth it in the end. I can listed to my songs and not cringe when i hear the drum tracks. 16) Would you care to list some of the places people can hear and buy some killer merchandise? Shaun) You can hear me right away at www.myspace.com/putridpile or you can order merch at www.putridpile.com or send me an email at
